We decided to make this website as a direct response to www.ilovethailand.org –a website that was recently launched by the Thai Prime Minister.
One particular video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n9Jb6AJGKk&feature=player_embedded ) that was posted on www.ilovethailand.org caused great offence to many Cambodians as it made unfounded claims regarding the history of Thailand, and by extension, the history of its neighbours, including Cambodia. To their credit, www.ilovethailand.org have since removed this user-submitted video.
While this is just one video amongst many that have been posted on www.ilovethailand.org, it is indicative of a particular Thai understanding of, and approach to, history. The official histories taught in Thai educational institutions, conflict with those of mainstream historians. A number of contemporary Thai historians acknowledge this, and challenge these accounts of history.
Prince Damrong – widely regarded as the father of Thai history, and the founder of the modern Thai education system – makes little mention of Cambodia in his account of the history of the region. In contrast, contemporary Thai historians such as Sulak Sivarak, and Nidhi Eoseewong, acknowledge that the kingdom now known as Thailand only came into existence in the mid-14th century, and, that the Khmer empire, at its peak, “included everything right up to Lopburi and all of what is now Bangkok”.
These nationalist histories have been historically useful to Thailand in creating a unified nation. However, in the globalised world of today, information travels too fast and too freely for these mythical histories to be contained within Thailand. Such histories ultimately contribute the nationalist forces behind such events as the recent conflict over Prasat Preah Vihear. A conflict which has resulted in loss of life on both the Thai and Khmer sides. It is time for the errors of such histories to be openly acknowledged, and for their teaching to be completely abandoned.

i think u r the uneducated people, education can’t make u a good person in the society.
don’t say like this in the website becaz it show how ur personality it is. i am thai and i always respect to all the hitorical opinions. no matther where the boundery of thai – cambodia it is. how much ur understand about the word “HISTORY”. when we say it is hirtory, it have to depend upon the fact that is found from the history side or the fact that is interpretted from the history evidences. so the “HISTORY” could be changed all the time when we find out the new facts. and second of all, not every thais or educational institute will be like what u said. so when u wanna criticize someone, pls indicate, pls don’t say all the thai. Third of all, Khao Preah Viharn or Preah Vihear are the same thing, it just the matter of calling, thai language or cambodian language, i don’t see any difference, THINK, if u come to thai and say word “Preah Vihear” to thais, it will be strange to thais. don’t make it a point. Finally i don’t know how thais rude to u, or ur guys face any bad experince from thais, but believe me, all the people in this world are looked down, no matther who are, u may be looked down from SOME of thais but in the past,thais also was looked down by SOME of burma people, now thais was looked down by SOME of sigaporian, sigaporian may be looked down by ……someone else. As a matter of fact history is history. I understand that for a number of reasons your Thai historian do not really want to show the truth. To better live as a future good neighbor, certain acts of Thais or Thai people’s perceptions should be revised or change accordingly to the fact of history. You may well aware of your recent Government’s or a group of people’s acts that results in this prolong border row. I hope this site reflect message on Khmer history and relations with Thai. This is not a forum of insulting each other. You may help educate your friends, family, and people about the historical facts.

I am thinking that you have made a great mistake, intentionally or unintentionally, again sparking more conflict between the 2 nationalities – Thai and Cambodian. We have more than enough now and this has troubled both countries. What you are doning now is considered childish! What do you want behind your ideology or thinking. Do you want this part of the region to be like Cashmier (sorry if wrong spelling), Middle-east, or Pakistan part bordering Afganistan? If you are a westerner, it is a normal practice that of your contry fellows that on the front or public side you always say peace, peace and peace. But behind the scene, many of your weapon manufacturing companies (which support your government and are supported by your government) are making lucrative sales of amunitions to both conflicting sides. Needless to say, in Sri Lanka, in Nepal, in Bosnia, and so on, are very clear examples. And what are the end of your works, the collapse of one system and change to another and the misery of those citizens involved in the war. And you and your government and weapon making companies happily counting your income and the hardship of people.
Mr Obama (not sure that he is your president or not)recently was showcasing what I mentioned above. He with his greedy fellows from France, UK, and etc, are pushing Iran to the corner (next will be North Korea). While saying that “everybody please stop making nuclear weapons”, the USA and Russian each having more than 1500 nuclear bombs in their stockpile. What the hell does this mean – a lip service, a cheating nake. In Khmer we call ” t’wer nom ot m’sao AND jaak sang” and in Thai “yu hai rum tam hai rua”. This is what the westerners are specialised.
The good way that lay people should do is to remedy the situation and let people of the two countries live peacefully – not to reignite the situation.
King Jayavarman VII conquered most parts of Thailand, Lao and Vietnam during his reign at the now called Angkor Thom. During Ayuthaya period, Siam troops occupied Cambodia and Lao. Can we change that? No!The Cambodians always talk about when their old kingdom was at greatest peak as their pride and so do the Thais. Then if people always do like this, we will never have time to make peace. You westerner (like the French, the British, the American, the Dutch, etc.) are in fact making the world to distort – not cemented. Yes, all at your own interest and benefits.

If i may join, the history has obviously revealed, not my words neither yours. You might have come acrossed some Western historians who wrote on early state of formerly Siam or current Thailand and the time of Khmer Empire. Definitely, when those text came into Thai language, you might know clearly what they said about this. Especially, some thai historian referred “Khmer” as “Khom”in stead. And later one, Most of historical books pointed out that “Khom” are no longer existing in this world.
